When it came time to actually formulate and create a product, I knew outside help would be needed. As much as I had learned about sleep and nutrition, I still didn’t know much about the business of nutrition bars or how they’re made
I also had no way of knowing what would be an “optimal” formulation. We turned to the experts at Abunda Functional Foods. The folks at Abunda had been down this road before, helping to develop and launch products such as Sundance Organic Life® Teas, Carb Intercept®, BioBeads® and MojoMilk™.
They helped define the formulation and the ingredients we put in the bars, including an amazing patented ingredient called Chocamine®.
The way it was explained to me, Chocamine is a unique extract from caffeine-free chocolate that utilizes all the healthy stuff from chocolate and leaves behind all the empty fat, calories, and sugars. It helps to decrease hunger, improve mood, and aid in relaxation.
Once we had the basic formulation in place in terms of the bioactive ingredients, the only thing left to fine-tune was the taste and texture of the bars.
I want to point out that it was important to me that the bars taste delicious, and almost indulgent. Research shows that many people crave something sweet at the end of the day, when willpower is at its lowest point. I wanted a NightFood™ bar to not only support a good night of sleep, but to help people eliminate the needs and cravings to eat junk that might interfere with their sleep and other aspects of their health.
We included inulin, a beneficial fiber to aid in satiety (the feeling of fullness), and used organic brown rice syrup as a healthy natural sweetener; puffed amaranth for texture and special blend of high-quality whey and soy proteins, and real Oreo® cookie crumbles for that amazing Cookies & Cream flavor and a little crunch.
Here’s Peter Leighton of Abunda Functional Foods to talk a bit about the NightFood formulation:
